Too many people have been getting these parts wrong.  If you watch the music video you can tell the positions 
of his hand on the fret board.  And most of all, it just makes since to play it this position and strings.
Playing it on the high E string would give it too bright of a sound which in this case wouldn't fit the mood;  so
he's plays it on these 2 strings on the lower frets.  :)
